Weird On Many Levels

I’ve gotta admit, I was pretty surprised when I saw this piece of news…

I want to get some of your opinions on this. Basically, there is a Japanese Pop Group where one of the singers is actually a “fake” face. Some impressive video editors took the “prettiest” facial features from 6 different girls and somehow made a new girl. She looks pretty real to me. I’ll post 2 Youtube videos about this. The reason I picked 2 videos is that the youtube videos are made from some very strange news people. I think it’s really terrible how they make Japan look and they think they are being funny but they are not. This whole thing is quite strange. If you have a few minutes, take a look at the videos and practice some writing about your thoughts.

Note: To any Japanese people, I know these people doing the news are CRAZY. I’m just sharing because the whole thing is an “interesting” story and I want to hear the “world’s” thoughts about this. I know this is not a normal thing for your culture and I think it’s so stupid to watch western media trying to comment on other cultures when they have no idea about what they are talking about. It’s also important to note that this isn’t normal western media. They are just strange people on Youtube. No wonder there are so many misunderstandings in this world.

Here are the 2 videos. Check em out and comment below:

    wha’the heck !!!! why would they do such a thing . . I don’t get it, guys !!
    I can’t actually !! I’m totally confused when I think about the reason for them to create such a thing . . . it’s absolutely ridiculous !!

  2. Evgeny Says:

    It’s funny, why not?

  3. Mehdi Says:

It is all waste of time and energy, because there is not a shortage of beautiful girls who can sing.
furthermore, who make decision which girl has beautiful eye and which one have beautiful noise?

    it is ridiculous!!

  4. Evgeny Says:

It’s show us what people can do with technology. We can see how fast increase our ability as a civilization. It’s cool! It’s progress!

  5. china232 Says:

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the comments. I think it’s cool that they are able to use technology to do something like that. I was surprised they could make someone look so “lifelike”. If you didn’t know, the video looks like a real person, even the movement. It’s not easy to do. Asian countries are world leaders in many areas of technology and maybe this is just a part of the process. I don’t know. But to be honest, I don’t know the whole story, I’m not sure if the video makers were trying to make a popular pop star or practice technology. Maybe both.

I think whether it’s “right or wrong” depends on cultures too. That’s why here is such a great environment to discuss things like this. It’s a big mix of cultures on the 232. Obviously men and women tend to have slightly different opinions of things like this too, generally speaking of course.

My personal opinion is that if the other girls didn’t mind giving up their “eyes” or “nose” or whatever for the sake of the video, then that’s their decision and we don’t need to judge them. Again, that’s just my opinion.

It’s all a matter of attitude and opinion. Some people would think it’s kind of a fun thing to be a part of it, even if they are only the “nose”. Some people would be offended. What do you think?

    Thanks everyone,
    Andy

  6. Patricia Mendes Says:

More that a matter of attitude and opinion, I think that is a matter of culture. Japanese people like do things like it and what is the problem? If we look to our culture we sure will find some things that other people could consider freak and not understandable :) :)

So for example: In Brazil if you are eating your soup and do some noyse it is consider impolite but in Japan if you are eating your soup and don’t some noyse, it is impolite!!!!!

    Weird Word thank God!!!!!

  7. Miss_Understanding Says:

I don’t see anything unusual in this Pop Group. Japan experiences million things in technology and this is very interesting. I remember when I read about Hatsune Miku, a female hologram who performed a concert in the front of real audience. It was very innovative thing. Why not?

About changing facial features: what is the difference between this video and commercials edited with Photoshop? I don’t see big difference. Furthermore, how about people who undergo plastic surgery to look better? Sorry, I don’t see big difference.

The only bad thing I see in this situation is the news people. A normal piece of news doesn’t start with a biased comment applied to a whole culture. It’s just a video that might or might not be successful to some specific audience. A piece of normal, professional piece of news is neutral and presents facts rather than personal opinions of the anchors. When a person makes fun of something in a show, this is not actually “news” as well. Therefore, I would say these are not real news; they are just some shows that strive to increase their audience. They are subjective. They function like video tabloid. It’s the easiest way to edit a piece of news by pointing fingers. Some part of the audience will be thrilled to “judge and feel superior “judging” (that’s so bad!). YouTube and the whole Internet is full of junk and great things at the same time. It’s up to us who to take seriously.

  8. china232 Says:

    @ Miss_Understanding;

Great points. I don’t see the difference between this video and photoshop photos either. I also don’t think it’s a bad thing.

The biased little news piece was exactly as you said. They tried to get more people to watch and then they made big statements about a whole culture when they know nothing. The west is very guilty of this. I wrote about this little bit of “news” just to read some thoughts like this. Thanks.

I’d love to hear from some other people too. I think it’s great to hear a wide range of opinions.

    Hi 232,
    Here’s a suggestion for you.
I’ve listened to your podcasts and to be honest, I cannot help listening to them less than 2 hours a day. once you listen to one podcast, you want to practice it by yourself.
For a new breed of podcast, would you mind thinking about american movies? I mean, instead of you guys doing the conversations, let Will Smith or other stars do it and you guys only talk about slangs and vocabs.

  10. sara Says:

“Beauty” is always great Dear Andy and I always enjoy watching it, no matter what it is and how it is created. To be honest I didn’t see any problem in that. Japanese people have their own culture ,unfamiliar to us but lovely for sure.

  11. andy Says:

    Hi guys,

I just want to clarify a “possible” misunderstanding. I personally don’t think that “weird” is necessarily “bad”. It’s often associated with unique, at least the way I use the word. I just made that title to get some opinions and hear what you guys had to say about this whole thing. I wanted more people to read it so I called it “weird”.

I don’t have a problem with this whole thing either. I do think that the news anchor girl on the first “news” piece was a bit jealous of the Japanese beauty. I’m surprised no one mentioned that. What are your thoughts on that part? They guy, her partner, was just trying to be funny.

    Andy

  12. Dark Chocolate Says:

haha, this message is a bit of instigation to controversy, isn’t it?

I think the news woman wasn’t necessarily jealous but more of a feminist comment.
As far as I’m concerned, I admire many women withou being jealous but it’s a matter of taste. I personally like the most in the world the Italian actress Monica Bellucci, then Penelope Cruz, Demi Moore, Halle Berry, Marilyn Monroe. These women are not only beautiful but also interesting, charming, attractive, definitely not boring. I’m not a big fun of doll beauty, delicate and obedient. When it comes Monica Bellucci, I might reconsider my sexual orientation hahaha. I know many men have fantasies with Asian beauty type but it doesn’t mean the other women are jealous. It’s just a matter of taste.

It’s interesting you mentioned the word “weird”. In fact I heard so often this word “weird” among English-speakers (mostly young)…I started to believe that this is specific to the English-speakers culture. However, I like “weird” things. I see it as “interesting”. “Interesting” makes you think. To me, “interesting” is a better, more powerful word than “beautiful” or “hot”.

  13. Dark Chocolate Says:

I’d like to correct : “I’m not big fan of” instead “fun”.
Second correction: The news anchor girl made a feminist comment: “beauty perfection obsession”. In some ways, she might be right, we shouldn’t value a girl or a woman only because she is perfect, beautiful, flawless. It makes you think that a beautiful girl can be perceived only a decorative object. Must be very tiring to be beaitiful all the time. I hope it made sense what I said.

  14. andy Says:

    Hi Dark Chocolate.

Great points and very interesting to read your point of view. I’ll admit that it’s not certain that the woman was jealous. I’d like to point out that it’s not necessarily true that she wasn’t jealous either. We aren’t her so we can’t know the real truth.

The reason I felt, and still feel, a hint of jealousy from her was because she was trying to make those “cute” faces and laughing at those girls and almost laughing at the Japanese culture for doing that. It’s terrible to make fun of other cultures. I obviously don’t know 100% for sure but my guess is that deep down she’s a bit jealous that many men love external beauty so much. It’s a fact of life and I’m not sure she is perfectly comfortable with her own looks.

I could be totally wrong but that’s my feeling anyway. Love to hear more comments.

    Andy

  15. Dark Chocolate Says:

You are right, Andy, I reviewed the video and the woman seemed jealous, the way she comments and acts. It’s funny, I haven’t noticed her feeling, I was focusing on the verbal message and meaning. Many times I percieved other’s feelings but I haven’t noticed this time. Obviously those little Asians girls are very cute, cuter than her and she probably doesn’t feel comfortable comparing to those cute faces. It’s cool to notice these nonverbal emotional hints. I have a great respect for people with high emotional intelligence, a quality that predicts strong leadership skills and as individuals, very pleasant to be around them (You probably heard about or read about Daniel Goleman and other authors/studies). You’re smarter than me.

  16. china232 Says:

    Hi Dark Chocolate,

I have actually read a couple of books by Daniel Goleman. I remember really enjoying them.

Thanks for another really great comment. Hope to hear more from you in the future.

  17. s Says:

It’s funny to see that people (the reporters) made such a big deal out of this little video. This video was created as a commercial for a new candy product. I found the comment from the female reporter very funny when she said she felt sorry for the girls used to make the video, saying that “Oh they likes my eyebrows but my lips are not good enough…et c.” …..???? I think that is a very self-conscious thinking. I don’t think the girls in the video felt that way. I think that they just enjoyed the video shooting and got together to see friends. I don’t think there is deep meaning how they selected the parts from who, either.
Anyway, I didn’t know this video until it was introduced in this website.

  18. sara Says:

Me too agree with you on the jealousy of the girl on the news.
anyway thanks our dear Andy for sharing it with us.
