Improve your mood with thought.

I noticed the other day that my mood and the emotions I feel at any time, are very often unrelated to the present situation that I am actually experiencing. For example, if I hear my alarm clock go off in the morning and I know that I have to wake up to do something I don’t want to do, I’ll feel pretty annoyed and I won’t be in a great mood. On the other hand, if I hear my alarm clock go off in the morning and I realize that I have to wake up to get ready to catch an airplane to go on a fun vacation, I’ll be in a great mood.

I find it interesting that my mood can be so different even when what I am doing is exactly the same. For example, getting ready to do something I don’t want to do is the same as getting ready to do something I would love to do. I have to wake up, take a shower, eat breakfast, put my clothes on, etc. (I actually put my clothes on before eating breakfast!)

If you are unhappy with your job or another part of your life, it is easy to allow that unhappiness to affect other areas of your life. For example, if someone doesn’t like their job, they are not only unhappy during the 8 hours at work. They often are also unhappy when they wake up because they are thinking about how bad the day is going to be, they are unhappy while driving to work because they are thinking of how boring their job is, they are unhappy after work because they think about how boring the next day will be.

What you think about is so unbelievably important for feeling good (or feeling bad). What you think about determines your emotional state much more than what you are doing does. You could be at work doing a really boring job, but have a big smile on your face because you are thinking of a joke that your friend told you. You could also be at a really fun party with your best friends, and be feeling bad because you are thinking about how you are still angry with your boyfriend or girlfriend for something they did a week before.

Try not to allow yourself to feel bad for no good reason. If you are feeling bad, just realize that it’s most likely because of what you are thinking about, not what is actually happening at that moment. What you are actually doing at that moment probably isn’t really that bad. Try to think of things that you like to think about instead of thinking about what you hate. If you don’t like your job, think of a good plan about how you can get a new job, or how you can make your current job better. If you can’t think of something to make your situation better, then think about something else that you enjoy. Don’t just waste your time thinking about how bad something is. That’s ridiculous!

I always look forward to your comments!

Andrew

    Great post.
I think everyone at some point has had an experience where they yell at someone for no good reason, just because they are having problems in another area of their life. Just like you said, their mental state doesn’t let them realize that the person they are lashing out at may have done nothing wrong.
A lot of us that do this have to learn how to compartmentalize their lives so that they are able to separate their emotions about one thing, from the way they act at other times.

    Wow Andy,

What an extremely philosophical and wise aspect!

Exactly the same what I believe as well that people get hurt normally not because of the situation per se but due to unrealistic expectation.

Hope your article can be seen by many people so that they can get rid of such problems.

Thanks Andrew. When I read first pagagraph, I realize that it seems to be similar with me. I often allow my thinking to influnce on my mood. What an bad thing! I’ll try to change myself like your entry and I hope I can do that. First of all, I’ll try to get up at 5 a.m to do homework everyday. I promised that to myself 2 months ago but I still can’t do that. I’ll change my thinking what I profit when I get up early and how interesting!

This is an interesting subject. We often suffer from bad mood because we just think the bad side, the positive thinking of the issue is not come up. So we need to study the Philosophy, and know how to keep optimistic mind. It’ll make us feel happy.

This is very true, as I’ve seen in my own struggle with depression. What you think and feel are very closely related.

    Hey Andrew!

You always want us to write comments. At least you say so in the podcasts of which I am a great fan of! ;)
So here is my first comment: i really liked this article about being in a bad mood just because of negative thinking and not because of the real situation itself.
I want to add that I improved my English since I have been listening to your podcasts and they are pretty funny too! So I can recommend them to everybody who want to get better at English. Maybe you’ll think: hm, i don’t know… actually your English is very bad!
That might be true, but you don’t know what my English was like before ;)

So great job Andrew and … erm… (what was his brother’s name again?)
I hope you’ll keep it up!

    Hello Andrew,

As said in your blog, I keep learning English by listening to podcasts everyday. ( In fact, I just listen to podcasts for around 10 days. ) I found English myself is better today as I watched today’s TV spoken, of course, in English, I undsterstood what Obama and Mccain said to voters for his presidential election. I really happy with my greater progress. In fact, I have never understood what TV said before. :) )

The way I have been learning English for ages that I think is incorrect. I ever thought if I should go abroad to learn English that could achieve my goal. I was frustrated and thought if I would not be a guy to learn English. But now, I can adjust my emotion to be more positive to the way of what I am able to.

Thanks for your blog encouraging me so much in getting on with my emotional state.

    Hi Andrew!

I like your blog, you are right again. The emotional side is the most important thing which controls our behavior and our mood. Every time, when something bad happens and we cannot accommodate to it, it has a great influence on our mood, our behavior and our work. when I am on a good mood it does not matter what environment is surrounding me, I do everything with big pleasure.

I like to hear from you

With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any ways to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.
